I'm taking a class where I have to give a presentation about some sort of shady business practice. Here is the actual assignment info from the syllabus We all have issues with some business practices. Some stores won’t take back merchandise, others only give you in-store credit. Some businesses make products in America which are illegal to use in America, then sell these products to foreign countries. (DDT insecticide). Some businesses add ingredients’ to their food, ingredients that are known to cause cancer, but it makes the food taste better. Some businesses move manufacturing operations out of America to low wage countries, but then want to sell these products back to America. Some companies move just across the boarder to Mexico simply to avoid having to implement American pollution standards, then winds blow the pollution back over to American air-space. Some companies are in the business of war, they manufacture weapons and lobby hard to urge politicians to maintain or expand wars. Some companies are in the natural resources industry and lobby politicians to dilute environmental laws in order to access more natural resources – natural resources know to cause global warming and eventually lead to significant problems for the world.
And sometimes people trash perfectly good business practices….practices that you see a lot of good in, and others dislike. For example, you may have grown up in Pendleton and know that the Hydro Electrical dams on the Columbia River create water reserves which allow farmers to grow thousands of acres of wheat, feeding thousands of people. Other’s see the Electrical companies dams on the Columbia as blocking salmon runs and destroying native fish runs. Which practice is right? Pick a side and argue for it, and try to develop a solution.
So if any of you have any ideas please let me know. I have two weeks until I have to present.
It's no secret that I have an unhealthy addiction to infomercials. I've seen them all....more times than I'd like to admit. I very rarely actually buy the things they're selling, but somehow find it so interesting. And the cheesier the better, bump-its anyone? I don't know if I could list all of my favs, but here are a few Oxi-clean (a classic) Strap perfect (Currently using) any sort of steam cleaner even though I've never used one, the snuggie, spray on hair, the set-it-and-forget-it rotisserie, I can't forget the ShamWow (Dustin actually got 'shammied' by that vince guy-the one that just got arrested- at the state fair years ago) Nads, the gazelle, the magic bullet, Jack LaLanne's power juicer. And as scary as it is I know I've seen lots more. So there is a new show about the people that make the infomercials. I feel that maybe I'm not alone in my weird fascination with 30 minute long commercials. I don't think I'd ever want to be the actual pitch person, but I would love to be the side kick that gets to be overly surprised at everything. I think that would be the most amazing job ever.
Wyatt has had these itchy bumps on his legs, arms, back, neck and now tummy. I thought it was the cat, so we had Jack move up to Dan and Helen's barn. I steam cleaned the carpets and washed every fabric thing in our house. It's been over two weeks and yet Wyatt is not getting any better. Yesterday I was in class when I got a call from one of his teachers saying that Wyatt had been scratching his tummy since he got up from his nap and seemed really bothered by it. So today I took him to Dr. White to see what it is. Dr. White had no idea what it was. But, he didn't want Wyatt to have to have a biopsy on one of the bumps if he didn't have to. So he gave us a couple prescription creams to try and hope that it goes away soon. So tonight I gave him a bath and then Dustin and I applied it all over him. He started screaming. I felt soooo bad. I asked him what would make him feel better and he said "a band aid" so I put one on his tummy and one on his back and he said he was "all fixed now" Hopefully this will work!!
What would you do with $196? I can think of lots of things. New clothes? New shoes? Enough gas to make it to see my mom and have fish tacos? So what did I do with the $196? I bought this... because I'm cool like that.
Dustin has been making a 'racing' track for Wyatt in the back-back yard. On monday the weather was amazing, so after school/work Dustin and I went out and watched Wyatt put on a show. He's getting way too good on that thing.
Dustin and I got married in Maui in January of 2005. We have one son, Wyatt (4 years). One Dog, Tucker. Dustin works.....a lot! :) But finds time to take his family on rhino(a.t.v.) rides, wrestling with wyatt and is pretty much the funniest person ever. I am still at Western and starting to look for a job when I'm done. I love planning family day adventures and playing wii. Wyatt is starting his second year at T.R.I. (teaching research institute) also at Western Oregon University. If you read this blog you know that he's pretty much the greatest kid ever.
